Lauren Puleo joined the Friends of Creamer’s Field team in May 2024 as the seasonal Camp Habitat Director! With her love of Alaska, birds, and a passion for being involved in her local community, she could not help but stick around post-camp as the new Youth Education and Research Coordinator!
Lauren recently graduated with her M.S. degree in Environmental Conservation from the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she spent 3 years studying the migration timing and breeding biology of the Hudsonian Godwit (Limosa haemastica), a long-distance migratory shorebird. Having completed multiple field seasons in rural south-central Alaska, her ecological knowledge is deeply rooted in the region; despite being incredibly far from her hometown in Southwest Florida.
While developing herself as a shorebird aficionado and conservation scientist, she gained a passion for science education outreach through working with a local village near her field site. Since then, she has collaborated with multiple communities across Alaska to provide youth with place-based, experiential learning opportunities that foster excitement about the local environment and its inhabitants. Lauren strongly resonates with the sentiment “the more the merrier” and strives to ground her efforts and projects by collaborating with those around her whenever she gets the chance.
Lauren is excited to experience all that Alaska’s Interior has to offer. With the Friends of Creamer’s Field, Lauren is working to develop new and exciting community-based initiatives that inspire stewardship and appreciation of the refuge and beyond!
Welcome to the refuge, Lauren! We are excited to have you here at Creamer’s Field!
